IU president gets up-close view of vital role of IU's regional campuses

Indiana University continues to seek creative ways to engage students and faculty in innovative research and other activities that improve the economic vitality, health and well-being of Hoosiers across the state.

To help advance this mission, IU President Pamela Whitten recently toured the university's five regional campuses, IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and IU Southeast, where she received an up-close look at cooperative academic initiatives, high-impact campus practices and service-learning projects that are preparing students for success, while also addressing various challenges, such as food insecurity, talent development and access to quality health care, in the communities IU serves. Whitten, who visited IU East yesterday, also toured all of the regional campuses this past summer.

In a blog about her most recent campus visits, Whitten underscored the vital role IU's regional campuses play -- through enriching scholarship, research and creative activity -- in serving the people of Indiana. Serving more than one-third of the IU student body, IU's regional campuses are, at their core, learner-focused and community-engaged. As first-choice institutions for many Hoosier students who seek baccalaureate or selected master's degrees, they provide programs and experiences in a setting close to home and that afford both flexibility and the resources of a major public university. They also serve as cultural and economic hubs to help build and sustain thriving Hoosier communities.

Whitten also spotlighted the recent appointment of Susan Sciame-Giesecke as IU's vice president for regional campuses and online education. In this newly formed role, Sciame-Giesecke, who currently serves as chancellor of IU Kokomo, will provide focused strategic leadership for IU's regional campuses and the university's pioneering and successful online programs.
