Biography

Bill Stephan serves as Indiana University’s vice president for government relations and economic engagement, responsible for coordinating and connecting the university’s vast intellectual and creative resources with strategic opportunities that foster Indiana’s economic growth and for directing the university’s government relations efforts at the state and federal level.

An Indiana native, Stephan is an attorney by profession. He joined Indiana University in 2000 and his work has largely focused on addressing the interests and needs of the university’s external constituents and stakeholders.  He also worked for several years with the university’s healthcare partner, IU Health, as senior vice president for communications and community relations.

Prior to IU, Stephan served as chief of staff to former Indianapolis mayor Steve Goldsmith, led workforce development efforts for the city, and earlier in his career was chief magistrate at the Marion Superior Court, Juvenile Division.

Stephan holds a B.S. in economics from Arizona State University and a J.D. from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law.
